In May Stanford’s Urban Studies program: Human Cities China (part of the Human Cities Initiative) organsied a round table seminar at Tsinghua University in Beijing. The discussion was led by Stanford lecturers Deland Chan and Kevin Hsu, with Amy Mathieson, founder of Project: China Building Restoration, and Rosie Levine from the Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Centre invited as guest speakers.
The four speakers shared their international experiences from Beijing, Shanghai, and San Francisco to discuss the current state of architectural preservation, the role of changing mindsets and public participation to influence outcomes, and how individuals can partake in issues of neighborhood preservation and development.
